The town of Fergus and the Township of Centre Wellington will have a new force coming next Fall, 2017 – the Fergus Force Jr. A Hockey Club!
The Force will begin play in September for the 2017-2018 season in the GMHL (Greater Metro Jr. A Hockey League), entering its 12th season next year.
The league currently consists of 22 teams throughout Ontario and even one team in Quebec, ranging from Kingsville in the Southwest, to Temiscaming in the Northeast, just over the border into La Belle Province.
With its open border policy, allowing for an unlimited number of imports, with half the league’s players coming from outside of Canada and from literally every corner of the earth, there is a great international flavour throughout the GMHL.
While there are many players pursuing the game at the professional level, the focus of the league and the Fergus Force is to develop high-level student athletes for the collegiate level, using hockey as a means of pursuing a higher level of education.
The Force will play a 42 game regular season, with most of our 21 home dates on Sunday afternoons, with the occasional mid-week evening games to fill out the schedule.
There are numerous logistics involved in setting up an organization like this, from the operation of the hockey club on a daily basis, to the club’s involvement in the community.
We will be posting shortly a list of staffing requirements, information on billeting, sponsorship and season ticket packages, not to mention the ambitious list of activities our club will pursue with local schools, hospitals, retirement homes and local charities.
We are grateful for the support of CW Mayor Kelly Linton, along with Community Services Director Brian Detzler and CAO Andy Goldie, as well as local media outlets theGrand101 radio, the Wellington Advertiser, and Cogeco Cable.
Stay tuned for more!
